The Zambia Revenue Authority (ZRA) has intercepted an interlink truck carrying 160 drums of smuggled ethanol after the driver failed to produce valid customs clearance documents.
ZRA Manager for Corporate Communications, Oliver Nzala, confirmed in a statement issued on Sunday that the seizure took place at Tony’s Car Park in Magoye, Monze District.
Nzala said the ethanol-laden truck, bearing registration details KB81BBGP/HM09RKGP/HM09SCGP, was immediately escorted to the ZRA Controlled Premises at the Makeni Enforcement Centre for verification.
“Subsequent verification confirmed the consignment as smuggled goods. The smuggling of 160 drums—each with a 250-litre capacity—represents a revenue loss of K1.6 million,” Nzala stated.
He said both the truck and the ethanol consignment have since been seized, adding that the Authority has issued a stern warning to individuals and entities involved in smuggling.
Nzala stressed ZRA’s commitment to strict enforcement of customs laws, warning that any attempt to bypass these regulations would attract severe penalties, including prosecution.
“The seizure of this truck is a clear demonstration of the ZRA’s resolve to curb smuggling. Smuggling is a serious offense that carries heavy penalties, including substantial fines and imprisonment,” he said.
Nzala added that vehicles used in smuggling activities were subject to seizure and forfeiture to the state. He said ZRA would continue to intensify enforcement to protect national revenue and ensure fair trade practices.
He reaffirmed the Authority’s vigilance in combating smuggling and safeguarding Zambia’s economic interests.
