ZMP leader, Bwalya, plots political alliances to unseat UPND in 2026

Zambia Must Prosper (ZMP) leader, Kelvin Fube Bwalya, has expressed his readiness to form political alliances aimed at unseating the ruling United Party for National Development (UPND) in the first round of the 2026 general elections.

“We are ready to join a meaningful political alliance to ensure the UPND government is defeated,” Bwalya said.

He told Copperbelt members who gathered at Ndola’s Hindu Hall on Wednesday that he was looking at a possibility of joining forces with other opposition parties to defeat the ruling party without going into the second round.

Bwalya also pledged to pardon all “political prisoners” and eliminate political vindictiveness if elected president in 2026.

He condemned what he described as “persecution” of individuals convicted on politically motivated charges.

“We will release all political prisoners convicted on flimsy charges aimed at making political scores. This must be addressed differently, not through persecution,” Bwalya declared.

He further assured that his administration would restore the rule of law by repealing unconstitutional laws, including the Cyber Security and Cyber Crimes Act and the Public Order Act, which he argued restricted fundamental freedoms.

“These laws undermine freedoms of expression, assembly, and movement, which are guaranteed by the constitution. We will ensure they are scrapped to allow Zambians to enjoy their rights fully,” Bwalya said.

His comments come amid increasing criticism of the UPND’s governance, with opposition parties accusing the ruling party of authoritarian practices and failing to deliver on campaign promises.

Addressing gender issues, Bwalya promised to promote equality by appointing more women to critical government positions.

“We are serious about gender emancipation because we know the capacity of women to deliver once given the opportunity,” he said.

Bwalya also pledged to encourage population growth to create a robust labour market, emphasizing that a large population was key to driving development.
