Zimbabawe: Independent presidential candidate, Kasukuwere, shades African leaders for stifling democracy

0

An aspiring independent candidate in the Zimbabwean presidential poll, Saviour Kasukuwere, has accused some African leaders of weaponising the Judiciary in order to weaken their political opponents.

Kasukuwere is in Zambia to conduct a number of meetings for two days and spoke to Zambia Monitor in Lusaka on Monday.

He said some countries were failing to conduct clean elections and that this was embarrassing to the outside world, which is expecting Africa to lead in upholding tenets of democracy.

“The opposition leaders are often arrested and locked up in order to intimidate them through the use of the bogus legal system and this needs to change with new leaders ushered in place,” Kasukuwere said.

He said nationals from such countries like Zimbabwe were going through a lot of pain and are only waiting for an opportunity to cast the ballot and remove such leaders from the office.

“The economies require all hands on the deck, the economies require reconciliation, it is paramount that our people are brought together, let bygones be bygones and issues must be resolved because the country needs healing,” Kasukuwere said.

Zimbabweans will go to the polls on August 23, 2023 to elect a new leader and campaigns are in full swing with the incumbent President, Emmerson Munangagwa, running for a second term.
