Zambia’s power utility, ZESCO, has announced that diesel generators deployed during the power crisis will remain in use to ensure a stable power supply for markets and critical areas even after the crisis subsides.
ZESCO Communication Strategy Manager, Mantanga Sibalwa, confirmed in a statement issued Wednesday that the gensets would provide support during peak demand periods, system maintenance, or when the electrical grid was strained.
“These diesel-powered generators are essential for resilience and stability, safeguarding against future energy generation fluctuations,” Sibalwa stated.
He added that the generators are optimised to run for eight hours during peak business hours, ensuring continuity for market traders and local economies.

Sibalwa also highlighted ZESCO’s efforts to reduce energy costs, noting emergency tariff reductions for residential customers by 20 percent for the first 100 units and five percent for 200 units purchased monthly.
Commercial customers have similarly benefited from a 15 percent reduction for power consumption up to 100 units, aimed at supporting SMEs.
“This initiative reinforces ZESCO’s commitment to maintaining reliable power for essential services and boosting access for communities,” Sibalwa stated.
