The Zambia Development Agency (ZDA) has announced that the 2023 trade mission to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) generated US$13.80 million, with over US$6 million worth of transactions already realised through exports.

ZDA Director-General, Albert Halwampa, in a statement on Monday, stated the importance of the DRC as Zambia’s largest market for non-traditional exports.

He highlighted the need to strengthen Zambia’s presence in the Congolese market by conducting annual trade missions and market research.

“Trade missions are a vital tool for connecting exporters to markets and have proven highly effective,” Halwampa stated.

The objective of the trade mission, according to Halwampa, was to facilitate the growth of Zambia’s non-traditional exports (NTEs) and secure greater market access for Zambian products.

Halwampa announced that he would lead a delegation of Zambian businesses to Lubumbashi, Haut-Katanga province, for a trade mission from October 16 to 18, 2024.

The delegation is expected to include 40 Zambian companies from sectors such as agriculture, agro-processing, mining, engineering, chemicals, and pharmaceuticals.

The mission would include exhibitions, an opening session with Congolese government and industry leaders, and business-to-business meetings facilitated through a match-making process.

“We believe this mission will strengthen trade relationships and help Zambian businesses scale up production, creating more employment opportunities,” Halwampa explained.
