Health Minister, Dr. Elijah Muchima, has announced that Zambia has 1,262,303 doses of the oral cholera vaccine remaining, which will be deployed to any identified hotspots.
Speaking at a media briefing in Lusaka on Monday, Muchima highlighted the progress made in cholera vaccination campaigns across affected districts.
He revealed that 133,525 doses had been administered in Chililambombwe District, surpassing the initial target of 129,837.
In Nakonde District, 200,878 people were vaccinated against a target of 183,506. Meanwhile, in Kitwe, the Ministry successfully met its target of 337,697 doses, with 154,541 administered to adults and 163,156 to children.
Muchima said these vaccination efforts had significantly reduced cholera cases and the severity of infections in affected communities.
“The Zambian government remains committed to addressing the cholera outbreak and other public health threats to ensure the well-being of our people,” he said.
Muchima reaffirmed government’s commitment to expanding Oral Rehydration Points (ORPs) in affected communities.
These facilities provided life-saving hydration for cholera patients while they await referral to treatment centers.
“Vaccination remains a key pillar in our response. Our priority is the swift resolution of this crisis and the protection of our people,” he added.
