Zambia has reportedly made a significant stride in global diplomacy with the appointment of Eunice Luambia as the Focal Point for Small Island Developing States (SIDS) and Least Developed Countries (LDCs) at the United Nations Human Rights Council.
The appointment was announced on February 28, 2025, by Jürg Lauber, President of the Human Rights Council, alongside several other key designations aimed at enhancing inclusivity and representation within the UN system.
According to a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation in Lusaka, this appointment places Zambia at the forefront of advocating for the world’s most vulnerable nations.
It reflected Zambia’s ongoing commitment to global equity, amplifying its voice in shaping international policies that prioritize resilience and sustainable development for developing countries.
“The appointment highlights Zambia’s dedication to advocating for vulnerable nations and reinforces its leadership role in international development and human rights,” the statement read.

Through this new role, Zambia plans to build strategic partnerships with other nations, international organizations, and key stakeholders to ensure the interests of developing nations are effectively represented.
“Zambia’s advocacy will be crucial in addressing the climate vulnerabilities, economic disparities, and human rights challenges faced by SIDS and LDCs,” the Ministry added.
Alongside Luambia’s appointment, the Human Rights Council also designated several other individuals, including Usana Berananda of Thailand and Marcos Gómez Martínez of Spain, as Co-Facilitators for the rationalization of initiatives and activities.
Other key appointments include Francisca Escobar of Mexico as Co-Facilitator for the use of modern technology in the Council’s work, and Maira Alvarez of Bolivia as the Gender Focal Point.
