Zambia’s contribution to global peacekeeping missions extolled

The Zambia Army has been commended for its continued maintenance of a good record in peacekeeping missions.

According to the United Nations, Zambia has a total of 951 military and police personnel in the missions, of which 184 are female.

Zambia’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations in New York, Ambassador Chola Milambo, said the country was internationally recognised as a beacon of peace and stability.

Milambo said Zambia’s support for resolutions to a nuclear-free world was also recognised internationally.

He said this when he held a briefing with heads of defence and security wings at Zambia Army Headquarters in Lusaka recently to primarily brief them on the outcome of the 77th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA77).

During the meeting, Milambo highlighted the need for enhanced deployment of Zambia Police and Zambia Correctional Service personnel in United Nations operations.

“It is also important for the defence and security services to support the Zambian office of the military advisor to be upgraded and increase its manpower,” he said.

Zambia ranks as the 21st troop-contributing country in the world.

UNGA77 was held from 13-27 September 2022 and addressed, among many pressing issues, Zambia’s role in the UN peacekeeping missions and international security.

The next session, UNGA78, will be opened on 12 September at the United Nations Headquarters in New York and will tackle, among other key matters, global peace and security.
