Zambian Premier League suspends referee indefinitely for poor officiating amid growing concerns over hooliganism

Christina Zulu, Head of Communications for the Zambian Premier League (ZPL), has announced the suspension of referee, Shem Nyondo, following poor officiating during the Week 17 fixture between Kabwe Warriors and Nkana FC on December 2024 at the Godfrey Ucar Chitalu Stadium in Kabwe.

In a statement on Sunday, Zulu confirmed that Nyondo’s performance in the 1-1 draw match was deemed subpar, prompting the referees’ sub-committee to take action.

“Nyondo has been suspended indefinitely from officiating ZPL matches while investigations into the matter are ongoing,” she said.

“A final decision will be made by the Technical Committee of the Referees Sub-committee based on their findings.”

This suspension comes amid grave concerns raised by the ZPL over the increasing incidents of hooliganism and unsportsmanlike behavior during league matches.

Zambia Monitor reported that recent disruptions, including missile-throwing at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium during the Week 15 Kitwe derby between Power Dynamos and Nkana FC, have raised alarms about the safety of fans and the integrity of the sport.

Similar misconduct was reported during Week 17 matches at Railway Stadium in Kabwe, where Kabwe Warriors faced Nkana, and at Nkoloma Stadium during the match between Atletico Lusaka and ZESCO United.

Zulu emphasized that the ZPL remained committed to upholding the highest standards of officiating, integrity, and fairness.

“As we professionalize and commercialize the league, it is critical that we maintain the credibility of the sport and ensure the safety of all involved,” she added.
