The Zambian government is urging increased private sector investment in the agriculture sector to strengthen food security and drive national growth.

Ministry of Agriculture Director Dr. Chizumba Shepande emphasized the importance of private sector involvement in achieving the country’s targeted production volumes in agriculture.

Dr. Shepande made these remarks during a courtesy visit to Zambia’s Acting High Commissioner to South Africa, Inonge Mwenya, on Tuesday.

The visit, which was part of efforts to promote agricultural development, was highlighted in a statement issued by the Zambian High Commission in Pretoria, South Africa.

Shepande encouraged Zambia’s diplomatic missions to familiarize themselves with key policy documents such as the Comprehensive Agriculture Transformation Support Program (CATSP), which aims to support the government’s agricultural objectives.

In response, Acting High Commissioner Mwenya affirmed the government’s commitment to ensuring the smooth implementation of agriculture-related programs for the benefit of Zambia’s citizens.

She noted the importance of the delegation’s visit to South Africa, which aimed to share experiences and enhance Zambia’s agricultural productivity.

“This benchmarking exercise will help Zambia adopt best practices that will improve service delivery and boost productivity,” Mwenya said.

Meanwhile, Hector Hamusakwa, an official with the Presidential Delivery Unit (PDU), highlighted the need for coordinated efforts between line ministries and Zambia’s diplomatic missions to facilitate trade and strengthen agricultural value chains in line with President Hakainde Hichilema’s targets.
