A film titled “Usiliye”, directed by Zambian Dickson Mwape has won an award at the 2023 Liverpool Indie awards in the United Kingdom.
The movie was selected from almost 670 submissions from around the world.
“Usiliye which featured the likes of Mumba Yachi, Brian Shikelenge, Daxon Mumba, Hoff Jacob and Margaret Ntenga won the award last week at the Liverpool Indie 2023 edition official selection.
Mumba Yachi who was the main character confirmed this in a recent interview.
“Usiliye which is my film was selected among 669 submissions from around the world, Zambia has got so much talent, as you may be aware, Liverpool Indie awards is the entry point into the UK and European film market,” he said.
The aim of the festival was to raise awareness and promote the various aspects of international cinema in all its forms by celebrating filmmakers who challenge the conventional way of film making.
A synopsis of Usiliye movie was that in the aftermarth of a brutal attack in their village by rebel groups, Tumelo, a man in his 30as, along with his seven months pregnant wife Amina who is in her late 20s and their son Sabiti, 12, find themselves fleeing into the forest of Bunagana village in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
However, their escape leads them straight into clutches of the most dangerous rebel group in the area.
