Zambian delegation, led by Haimbe, arrives New York for UN general assembly, summit

Zambia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Mulambo Haimbe, has arrived in New York to participate in the 79th Session of the United Nations General Assembly.

According to Namatama Njekwa, First Secretary for Press and Public Relations at Zambia’s Permanent Mission to the UN, Haimbe is leading the Zambian delegation, which includes several key ministers.

These include Felix Mutati, Minister of Technology and Science; Frank Tayali, Minister of Transport and Logistics, Charles Milupi, Minister of Infrastructure, Housing and Urban Development and Elijah Muchima, Minister of Health.

Other delegates accompanying the ministers are Etambuyu Gundersen, Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs; Angela Kawandami, Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Community Development and Subeta Mutelo, Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Small and Medium Enterprises, along with other ministry officials.

The General Assembly, which begins on Tuesday, would focus on the theme “Leaving No One Behind: Acting Together for the Advancement of Peace, Sustainable Development, and Human Dignity for Present and Future Generations.”

The Zambian delegation would also participate in the historic Summit of the Future, set to begin on Monday.

This summit follows a 2021 UN resolution and builds on the 2023 Sustainable Development Goals Summit.

It aims to negotiate an action-oriented Pact for the Future to address global governance gaps and strengthen cooperation on critical global issues.

In addition to attending the General Assembly and Summit, Zambia would co-host three side events on topics such as sustainable financing for future generations, the Global Digital Compact, and ending child marriage.

Zambia and the Republic of Seychelles would co-host the event on sustainable financing, with support from the United Nations Population Fund.
