The government has launched the Border Development Strategy, an initiative aimed at enhancing trade facilitation, upgrading border infrastructure, and fostering economic growth in border communities.
Speaking at the dissemination meeting at Government Complex in Lusaka, Ministry of Commerce, Trade and Industry Permanent Secretary, Lillian Bwalya, underscored the strategy’s role in transforming Zambia’s borders into economic hubs.
“This initiative underscores our commitment to inclusive growth, regional trade, and sustainable economic development,” Bwalya said.
She stated that borders should be seen as gateways to opportunity rather than mere national dividers.
“For Zambia, our borders hold immense potential to transform communities, strengthen regional integration, and drive commerce and industry,” she added.
Bwalya noted that the initiative aligns with Zambia’s commitments under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) and broader regional integration efforts.
“This strategy reaffirms our commitment to leveraging trade as a catalyst for growth and development,” she said, urging collaboration among government agencies, the private sector, and local communities.
She also called for determined efforts to ensure the strategy translates into tangible benefits, thanking stakeholders for their contributions.
“The success of this strategy depends on the collective will and action of all stakeholders. Together, we can unlock the full potential of our border areas and transform them into hubs of economic prosperity,” she said.
