The United States Centre for Disease Control (USCDC) and Prevention will in the next one year provide an additional K26 million to Zambia for the Epidemiology Training Programme, authorities have said.

US CDC Representative, Lyn Thi Nguyen, said from the K26 million, K20 million will go towards integrated disease surveillance response at facility, district, provincial and national level.

Nguyen revealed this when she handed over two vehicles to the Zambia National Public Health Institute (ZNPHI) valued at K3 million in Lusaka on Friday.

She said K6million will go towards implementation of the intermediate Field Epidemiology Training Program tier.

“Since 2014, Zambia has implemented the Field Epidemiology Training Programme (FETP) to train frontline healthcare workers and field epidemiologist in applied epidemiology to enhance epidemiological capacity and to lead in outbreak investigations,” Nguyen said.

Nguyen said the vehicles handed over to ZNPHI are vital in monitoring and containing outbreaks of diseases like Cholera, Polio and Covid 19.

“CDC values the work that ZNPHI through FETP does in Zambia at enhancing epidemiology capacity. The U.S government looks forward to continued work with ZNPHI to ensure the health of Zambians is guaranteed,” she said.

ZNPHI Director General, Roma Chilengi, said the donation of the vehicles represents the commitment by US CDC towards strengthening epidemic response activities in Zambia and Africa.

“In addition, this support has facilitated the procurement of two utility vehicles to improve response time during detection, investigation and response to public health emergencies in various parts of the country,” he said.
