Zambia to receive food aid from Ukraine, as country battles worst drought in years

Ukraine has officially included Zambia in its food assistance programme following the declaration of a drought emergency affecting 84 districts in the country.

Ukrainian Foreign Affairs Minister, Dmytro Kuleba, announced this during a courtesy call on President Hakainde Hichilema at State House in Lusaka on Tuesday morning.

Kuleba emphasized that the inclusion aims to provide crucial support amid Zambia’s challenges.

He commended President Hichilema for his commitment to peace and acknowledged his support for Ukraine’s pursuit of a peaceful resolution to the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict.

“My president is grateful for your support and your role among the leaders seeking a peaceful solution,” Kuleba stated.

He expressed gratitude for Hichilema’s diplomatic efforts and the dedication of the Zambian government and its people in these challenging times.

Kuleba’s visit also focused on exploring new trade and collaboration opportunities between Ukraine and Zambia.

He underscored the importance of strengthening bilateral ties to address mutual interests and enhance cooperation.

In response, President Hichilema reaffirmed Zambia’s commitment to international peace and support for those affected by global conflicts.

He expressed solidarity with victims, particularly children and women and highlighted Zambia’s dedication to resolving conflicts affecting vulnerable populations.

Hichilema also stressed the need for ongoing cooperation in agriculture and humanitarian aid, extending gratitude to international partners for their support in the quest for global peace.
