Zambia and Tanzania have called on the warring parties in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) to agree to a ceasefire and halt hostilities, expressing deep concern over the deteriorating security situation in the eastern DRC.

The call was made following the 3rd Session of the Zambia-Tanzania Joint Permanent Commission, held in Livingstone from February 24 to February 28, 2025.

The two nations commended the Southern African Development Community (SADC) and the East African Community (EAC) for organizing the first-ever Joint Summit of Heads of State and Government on February 8, 2025, in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

The summit was aimed at restoring peace and stability in the DRC and finding a lasting solution to the conflict.

The communique issued after the session reaffirmed the call for a ceasefire by all warring factions in the DRC and emphasized the importance of dialogue among stakeholders to reach a peaceful resolution.

“The Commission expressed support for the efforts of the SADC Organ Troika on Politics, Defence, and Security Co-operation, with Tanzania as the Chair and Zambia as the outgoing Chair,” the communique stated.

The meeting also discussed critical security matters, including transnational organized crimes such as smuggling, illegal migration, terrorism, and human and drug trafficking, alongside emerging threats like the weaponization of artificial intelligence and the proliferation of small arms.
