ZAMBIA’s Ministry of Sports, Youths and Arts has proposed to spend over K125 million next year’s towards sports development programmes.
In the 2023 national budget, the Ministry of Finance and National Planning allocated K269, 472,790, which represents a 56% increment from this year’s accounts.
About K911,4227 will be used for youths development, K45,566,521 for management and support services, while K8,307,766 for arts development and marketing.
Making his presentation in Zambia’s Parliament, Sports, Youths and Arts Minister, Elvis Nkandu proposed to spend K125, 493,276 for sports development from the total budget allocated for next year.
Sports development is key as it contributes to poverty and vulnerability reduction and physical and mental fitness.
Nkandu says funds will be divided into three sub categories namely sports development, sports management and funding for regional and international games.
“Under sports development, the Ministry has allocated K39, 968,961. A total of K69, 321,482 is proposed for the provision of grants to various sports federations for the development of sports in the country,” Nkandu says.
“The remaining funds will be spent on activities that promote the participation of vulnerable groups in sports such as girls in sports and persons with disabilities as well as purchasing of sports equipment’s which everyone wants,” he says.
Nkandu reaffirms the Ministry’s commitment to continue to work with line Ministries, local and international organisations and the private sector to promote and effectively implement youths, sports and arts development programmes.
He says they have achieved great deals due to collaborations with various institutions that have supported the development of youths, sports and arts in Zambia.
Nkandu challenges Zambians to support the 2023 estimates of expenditure for the Ministry of Sports, Youth and Arts to ensure successful and sustainable implementation of youth sports and arts programmes in Zambia.
Meanwhile, about K119, 392,178 was released by the Treasury as at November 17, 2022 for sports development activities.
Nkandu further disclosed that his Ministry received supplementary funding of K45, 250,000 earmarked for implementation of sports activities.
He says his Ministry implemented three sub programmes under sports management programmes namely sports development, regional and international games management.
Nkandu notes that in 2022, the Ministry supported over 30 different sports associations to enable them participate at both regional and international games and over 500 athletes, coaches and officials from different ports disciplines have benefited from the funds so far.
