Zambia seeks climate-resilient growth amid economic development push

The Zambian government has emphasized the need to balance economic development with efforts to mitigate and adapt to climate change.

Ministry of Green Economy and Environment Permanent Secretary, Dr. Douty Chibamba, highlighted the critical role of climate financing in achieving mitigation and adaptation targets, strengthening energy systems, and supporting sustainable development.

Chibamba’s remarks were delivered on his behalf by Ranford Simumbwe, Director of Human Resources and Administration, during the 4th Climate Compatible Growth (CCG) Network annual workshop in Lusaka.

He described the event as a vital platform for advancing Zambia’s climate resilience and sustainable economic growth.

“It is also a vital platform for aligning with the nation’s aspirations under the Eighth National Development Plan, the National Adaptation Plan, and the Green Growth Strategy,” Chibamba added.

He cited mechanisms such as emerging carbon markets and funding from international agencies—including the Adaptation Fund, Global Environment Facility, and Green Climate Fund—as key to mobilizing resources.

Chibamba urged stakeholders to embrace innovative solutions to enhance transparency, collaboration, and resilience for present and future generations.

Meanwhile, the UK government underscored the importance of Climate Compatible Growth (CCG) initiatives in promoting evidence-based policy development across Asia and African nations, including Zambia.

Nikolaus Clemenz, Climate and Environment Advisor at the British High Commission in Zambia, described the £95 million UK-funded initiative as vital for driving investment in low-emission transport, energy, and infrastructure.

“The network, hosted by the Department of Geography and Environmental Studies at the University of Zambia (UNZA), has been instrumental in shaping climate-relevant curricula for future generations,” Clemenz said.

He expressed gratitude to the Zambian government, UNZA, and other stakeholders for their contributions to the program, emphasizing its role in fostering long-term prosperity through collaboration and knowledge-sharing.

Similarly, UNZA Dean of the School of Natural and Applied Sciences, Dr. Orleans Mfune, highlighted the pressing challenges of climate change and the need for sustainable and resilient solutions.

Mfune described climate change as a crisis reshaping lives and stressed the importance of collaboration and innovation in tackling its complex impacts.

He reaffirmed UNZA’s commitment to fostering a collaborative research environment aimed at promoting a sustainable future for communities and the nation.
