The German government has pledged €108 million to support Zambia’s development agenda and drought response over the next two years.
German Ambassador to Zambia, Dr Anne Wagner-Mitchell, announced the commitment during bilateral talks on development cooperation held at the Ministry of Finance and National Planning in Lusaka.
Secretary to the Treasury, Felix Nkulukusa, and Dr Frank Hofmann, Head of Division for Southern Africa at the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), also attended the meeting.
Wagner-Mitchell highlighted that the pledge included €26 million previously committed to drought relief and resilience-building efforts.
“Germany’s new commitment of K3.14 billion will be implemented through financial and technical assistance in key areas of good governance, access to clean water and food security through climate-resilient agriculture,” she said.
She commended Zambia’s ongoing public financial management reforms, noting the strides in transparency and accountability, which aligned with Germany’s broader development goals of democracy, rule of law, and inclusive growth.
“We commend the Zambian government for addressing structural challenges to inclusive and sustainable development. These reforms form the foundation of our long-standing development cooperation,” she added.
Secretary to the Treasury, Nkulukusa, welcomed the €108 million commitment, emphasizing its significance in supporting good governance, water and sanitation, and food security.

“This support directly contributed to addressing the pressing challenges Zambia faces and aligns with the aspirations of the Eighth National Development Plan to achieve socio-economic transformation,” he said.
BMZ’s Hofmann reiterated the strength of the partnership between Zambia and Germany, built on trust and shared values.
“We are committed to helping Zambia navigate its current challenges while building a resilient and sustainable future for its people,” he stated.
Both sides stated the importance of continuing to implement key reforms to ensure sustainable development and highlighted plans to boost Zambia’s energy sector diversification, with a focus on promoting renewable energy.
