Zambia and Russia are in the final stages of negotiating an agreement to abolish visa requirements for citizens of both countries.

The Russian Ambassador to Zambia, Azim Yarakhmedov, announced the development, emphasising its potential to boost tourism between the two nations.

Ambassador Yarakhmedov shared this update during a reception held at Lusaka Intercontinental Hotel marking the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Russia and Zambia.

He noted that both sides were currently coordinating the agreement’s text and that this is part of a broader framework of over 35 bilateral agreements that cover various areas of cooperation.

“Overall, more than 35 bilateral documents have been signed over the years, creating a comprehensive legal foundation for our cooperation, which we continually enhance to meet our mutual interests,” Yarakhmedov stated.

“For example, we are now finalising an agreement to abolish visa requirements, which we believe will increase mutual tourism.”

Reflecting on the 60-year diplomatic relationship, Yarakhmedov recalled the Soviet Union’s establishment of ties with Zambia one week after its independence in 1964 and highlighted the landmark visit of Zambia’s first President, Kenneth Kaunda, to Moscow in 1974.
