Zambia Revenue Authority (ZRA) has issued a fourteen days ultimatum to taxpayers whose sales invoices were not declared for the period 2019 to 2022.
This was revealed after a data matching programme initiated by the Authority to determine the levels of compliance and enforcement among taxpayers.
Corporate Communications Manager Oliver Nzala said they had stepped up its data-matching compliance and enforcement programme in order to better accomplish its objective of maximizing and maintaining revenue collections.
Nzala indicated that the programme involves cross matching of data obtained from its Domestic Tax Management System (TaxOnline) to third party data sources.
He said in a statement in Lusaka on Thursday that the data matching has revealed taxpayer invoicing inconsistencies.
“Additionally, the results from the data matching ensures that ZRA’s enforcement and compliance work is directed and supported by the best possible intelligence and risk management assessment.
“In carrying out the data matching programme for the period December 2019 to August 2022, the Authority observed that a number of taxpayers did not declare the sales invoices on their Value Added Tax (VAT) returns for supplies made to their customers and this resulted in input VAT claims by the said customers which were not supported by the corresponding output VAT,” Nzala said.
He said to rectify the above irregularity, the Authority has issued bulk emails to taxpayers that failed the data matching verification exercise.
Nzala said the Authority has given a fourteen days ultimatum to the affected taxpayers to provide explanations as to why the sales invoices were not declared in the first place.
He said the Authority will issue a notice of assessment against the said invoices and may institute debt recovery action to safeguard government revenue.
