The Zambian government has reaffirmed its commitment to operationalising the Bilateral National Commission signed with Botswana in March 2024.

Zambia’s High Commissioner to Botswana, Pamela Chisanga, said the government was also ready to follow through on the implementation of various agreements signed at the same time.

Chisanga made the remarks in Gaborone on Monday during a courtesy call on Botswana’s Minister of International Relations, Dr. Phenyo Butale.

This is according to a statement issued in Lusaka by Zambia’s First Secretary for Press, Julia Malunga.

She highlighted the economic opportunities available for both nations, emphasizing the need to address challenges hindering trade.

“The two countries need to address bottlenecks and concerns that hinder trade between them,” Chisanga stated.

In response, Butale welcomed the High Commissioner and acknowledged the long-standing friendly relations between the two countries. He stressed the need to create an enabling framework to boost trade.

He further emphasized the alignment between Zambia and Botswana on economic diplomacy and called for continued collaboration.

Butale also reaffirmed Botswana’s support for Dr. Samuel Maimbo, Zambia’s candidate for the presidency of the African Development Bank (AfDB).

“The two countries signed the Bilateral National Commission in March 2024 and [Botswana] is ready, like Zambia, to follow through on the implementation of various Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs) that were signed at the same time,” he said.
