Zambia has been appointed First Vice Chairperson of African Union’s Specialized Technical Committee (STC) on Social Development, Labour and Employment.

This decision was made during the Fifth Ordinary Session of the STC in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, where Zambia was chosen to represent the Southern region.

According to Inutu Mwanza, First Secretary for Press and Tourism at the Zambian Embassy in Addis Ababa, the Bureau now includes Chad as Chairperson and Uganda.

Representatives from the Northern and Western regions have yet to be nominated.

Minister of Labour and Social Security, Brenda Tambatamba, expressed gratitude for Zambia’s nomination and emphasised the need for Africa to adopt strategies and policies at continental and regional levels to enhance social development, labour and employment.

Tambatamba is confident that the STC would develop roadmaps for policies on social protection, labour migration, youth employment, child marriage and ending exploitation and abuse of children.

Additionally, the STC will explore wage issues in Africa and operationalize dialogue mechanisms related to labour migration.

While in Addis Ababa, Tambatamba also visited the construction site of the new Zambian Embassy building, which is scheduled for completion by year-end.

She urged Embassy staff to align their duties with the 8th National Development Plan and to market Zambia’s economic and tourism potential.

Embassy Charge d’Affaires, Tom Michelo, thanked the Minister for her visit and assured her of the staff’s dedication to maximising Zambia’s benefits from the African Union, the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa, and Ethiopia.
