Zambia has lost 300 megawatts of power imports from Mozambique following the shutdown of power plants in the neighboring country, according to ZESCO.
ZESCO Spokesperson, Matongo Maumbi, revealed on Sunday that the imports, sourced through the utility and independent power traders, were crucial in addressing Zambia’s hydropower generation deficit caused by drought.
“This unforeseen development, attributed to the shutdown of some of Mozambique’s power generating facilities, has affected power imports into Zambia of up to 300 megawatts,” Maumbi stated.
In response, ZESCO had implemented emergency load management measures, disrupting the previously scheduled seven-hour daily power supply for residential customers.

Maumbi assured the public that ZESCO was closely monitoring the situation and would provide updates as new information emerges.
He also urged customers to cooperate during this period and exercise caution around power lines, as supply schedules may change without notice.
“ZESCO regrets the impact of this unplanned power import reduction and seeks customers’ understanding during this period of emergency load management,” Maumbi added.
