The Zambian government has urged local contractors to be more vigilant and ensure the timely completion of projects they have been assigned.

Subeta Mutelo, Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of Small and Medium Enterprise Development, expressed concern over delays in project completions across the country.

She made these remarks during her visit to the Industrial Yard and Cassava Bulking Centers in Kasama District, as stated by Sandra Mulenga, Northern Province Principal Public Relations Officer, on Thursday.

Mutelo emphasized that it was disheartening to see government funds allocated to local contractors who then failed to meet deadlines. She voiced dissatisfaction with the slow progress, especially since funds had already been allocated for the projects.

“It is our hope that the contractors will complete the work promptly so that the Cassava Bulking Center can be operational by the end of March,” she said.

The Permanent Secretary stressed that many farmers in the province had already planted cassava and were eager to bring their produce for processing at the Industrial Yard.

Mutelo also noted that the Ministry had been working to prioritize local contractors for such projects.

“Industrial Yards and bulking centers were established as part of the government’s strategy to support MSMEs by providing the necessary infrastructure for a conducive business environment,” she said.
