Government says finalisation of the Zambia’s National Adaptation Plan (NAP) is critical in addressing climate change challenges which the country has been facing.

Green Economy and Environment Permanent Secretary, Douty Chibamba, is optimistic that finalisation of the document would position Zambia towards achieving resilience to the impacts of climate change.

Chibamba expressed confidence that the country would finalise and submit Zambia’s NAP in time for the COP28 in Dubai this November.

Zambia would join a few other Least Developed Countries (LDCs) to have completed and submitted their NAPs to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).

He said this on Wednesday at the National NAP Validation workshop in Lusaka.

“This process is critical in addressing the climate change challenges that is affecting the entire globe, with severe negative impacts being felt by developing countries such as Zambia,” he said.

Chibamba explained that NAP was designed to contribute to the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), a mitigation and adaptation climate action plan.

He stated that together, the NAP and NDC laid out the country’s overall response to climate change to transition to a low emission, climate resilient future.

He expressed delight that the adaptation planning process had been highly participatory and inclusive of key sectors negatively by climate change with citizen’s views taken into consideration.

The National Adaptation Planning process started in mid-2020 after the Government received readiness support grant from the Green Climate Fund to develop the NAP and is expected to end in December 2023.
