The Zambian government has reportedly closed all the three functional borders leading to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) as protests by that country’s citizens over the reported ban on beverages and lime by the Congolese government.
According to a news report monitored from ZNBC by Zambia Monitor on Saturday, Commerce, Trade and Industry Minister, Chipoka Mulenga, said three borders leading to Congo had been temporarily put on hold due to protests.
“All the three borders to the DRC on the Copperbelt have been temporarily closed following protests,” Mulenga said.
He defended the decision saying the development was aimed at protecting the country’s property and human life, owing to the protests taking place in the DRC.

The last 10 days have seen protests in the neighbouring country following the ban of imports in lime and beverages into that country.
He said the Zambian government would engage authorities in DRC on the possibility of resolving the matter.
Mulenga called for patience among drivers and the Zambian people on the traffic that may start to build up as a result of the development.
He insisted that Kasumbalesa, Mokambo and Sakania borders would remain closed until the matter was resolved.
