Zambia Athletics cracks down on uncertified event organisers

Zambia Athletics (ZA) has urged the Zambia Police Service and City Councils to stop issuing permits to athletics organisers who do not possess a ZA certificate.

ZA President, Elias Mpondela, stated that all athletic event organisers in Zambia must be registered and certified by Zambia Athletics.

Speaking during a press briefing in Lusaka on Saturday, Mpondela stated that organisers, including City Marathon, must acknowledge and comply with the governing rules of athletics in the country before proceeding with their events.

“City Marathon wants to do everything, and we cannot accept this,” Mpondela stated.

He appealed to the Zambia Police and local authorities to assist Zambia Athletics in managing the sport by preventing uncertified events from taking place.

“We appeal to you, help us manage our sport. Don’t grant access to roads for people who are not certified by us,” he added.

Mpondela reiterated that certification from ZA should be a prerequisite for the Zambia Police and local authorities when granting access to athletic event organizers.
