Zambia, Angola sign agreements on Lobito corridor, aviation to strengthen bilateral cooperation

Zambia and Angola have signed two key agreements aimed at strengthening bilateral cooperation: one for the development of the Lobito Corridor project and another on aviation.

Speaking during the official opening of the 2025 Land-Linked Zambia Conference at Ciela Resort in Chongwe on Thursday, President Hakainde Hichilema urged African nations to enhance intra-African trade and dismantle barriers through bold infrastructure investments, particularly in roads and rail.

The conference is being held under the theme: “Africa thrives when we connect, collaborate, and trade as one.”

President Hichilema emphasized the need for African countries to invest in rail infrastructure and implement non-stop border posts to facilitate faster movement of goods and services.

“Zambia is on a mission to double our economy, create jobs, and grow our treasury revenue to deliver better health, education, and opportunities for every Zambian,” he said.

Positioning himself as Zambia’s “Chief Marketing Officer,” President Hichilema used the platform to promote Zambia as a stable and attractive destination for investment.

He also reiterated his call to the financial sector to reduce the high cost of capital, which he said continues to hinder business growth.

Transport and Logistics Minister, Frank Tayali, highlighted the sector’s progress, citing multiple international engagements and achievements.

Africast Managing Director, Chimwemwe Nyirenda, noted the growth of the annual event, now branded as Africa’s Transport and Logistics Indaba, with participation expanding from one to 18 countries.

“The event provides a platform for stakeholders in the transport and logistics sector to network, collaborate, and drive regional integration,” Nyirenda said.

The Bilateral Air Services Agreement (BASA) signed between Zambia and Angola outlines the rights and obligations of airlines from both countries in operating international flights between the two territories.
