The Zambia Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ZACCI) has urged the Zambian and Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) governments to work together to prevent future trade disruptions at Kasumbalesa and other border posts.

ZACCI president, Anthony Kabaghe in a statement issued on Thursday, stated the importance of maintaining a strong and mutually beneficial trade relationship between the two countries.

He reaffirmed the chamber’s commitment to supporting initiatives that foster regional trade, economic growth, and the welfare of citizens in both nations.

Kabaghe praised the Zambian government for its swift and effective mediation with the DRC, which led to the quick resumption of trade between the countries. He noted that the prompt resolution highlights the significance of sustaining robust trade relations between Zambia and the DRC, both of which share economic interests and a commitment to sustainable and inclusive growth.

“This positive outcome follows the recent temporary restrictions imposed by DRC authorities on the importation of key Zambian products, including beer, soft drinks, tiles, earthenware, and lime,”

Kabaghe said. “These restrictions had significant adverse effects on commerce and contributed to instability within the DRC.”

He also noted that Zambia and the DRC are signatories to various regional and continental trade protocols, underscoring the importance of their trade relations in sustaining growth across priority sectors such as manufacturing, mining, and agriculture.
