The World Bank has committed to providing US$30 million in funding to support refugees and host communities in Zambia.
This announcement was made by Dr. Andrew Roberts, a Senior Social Development Specialist and task leader at the World Bank, during his visit to Lusaka on Monday.
Dr. Roberts met with Joseph Akafumba, the Permanent Secretary for Home Affairs and Internal Security.
He stated that the funding would be utilised to improve livelihoods and bolster infrastructure for both refugees and their host communities.
This initiative aims to align with government policies focused on social cohesion and community development.
“The project will play a crucial role in implementing strategies that promote social cohesion and support for both refugees and local communities,” Roberts said.
Permanent Secretary Akafumba expressed gratitude for the World Bank’s sustained support and partnership in enhancing the welfare of refugees and host communities.
He underscored government’s commitment to the timely approval and successful execution of the Zambia Refugees and Host Communities Project.
Additionally, Akafumba highlighted that the project would include the issuance of identity cards to refugees.
