In a case that has shocked the nation, Sylvia Mutuba, wife of the late George Kalaba, has been committed to the High Court for manslaughter.

This followed the discovery of Kalaba’s skeletal remains in January, found on their marital bed—two years after his death.

Mutuba, 51, of Garden-Luangwa compound, is facing manslaughter charges, while the late Kalaba’s three daughters—Wendy Kalaba, 27, Sandra Kalaba, 22, and Natasha Kalaba, 19—along with Mutuba’s close friend, Preteria Mbadama, 44, are charged with failing to give notice of death or concealing a death, a violation of Zambia’s Birth and Death Registration Act.

Appearing before Magistrate Constance Kansakala, the accused were informed that their case falls under the jurisdiction of the High Court, where they will stand trial.

The prosecution, led by Victor Moonga, confirmed that all legal formalities had been addressed, allowing the case to proceed.

Initially, a 15-year-old daughter of the late Kalaba was among those arrested.

However, police later confirmed that she was not part of the accused and has since been released.

The case came to light on January 14, 2025, when Emmanuel Kalaba, 55, reported to Emmasdale Police Station that his younger brother, George Kalaba, had been found dead in a skeletal state at his home in Luangwa-Garden compound.

Following investigations, the six suspects were arrested and charged with manslaughter under Section 199 of the Penal Code Act, Chapter 87, and concealing a death under Section 9 of the Registration of Births and Deaths Act, Chapter 51.

The accused remain in police custody as they await trial at the High Court.
