Lombe Chali, the wife of fugitive Petauke Central lawmaker, Emmanuel Banda, has been arrested and charged with aiding a prisoner to escape.

Banda, who was facing charges of attempted murder and aggravated robbery, escaped from lawful custody while being treated at Chipata General Hospital.

Police Spokesperson, Rae Hamoonga, in a statement issued in Lusaka on Tuesday, said Chali was formally charged on August 9, 2024, and was later released on bond.

Hamoonga reaffirmed the police service’s commitment to upholding the law and ensuring that those who breach it, regardless of their status or position, are held accountable.

He assured the public that no stone would be left unturned as the police work to ensure justice is served.

“Following further investigations into the circumstances surrounding the escape, two police officers, Mfungwe Phineas and Kabole Benson, as well as three prison warders, were arrested,” Hamoonga said.

He identified the warders as Sakala Moses, Nathan Mbao, and Musa Spider Zulu.

All five were arrested on August 12, 2024, and later released on police bond.

Hamoonga confirmed that all have been charged with aiding a prisoner to escape, contrary to Section 120, Chapter 87 of the Laws of Zambia.

“All six suspects have been released on police bond and will appear in court soon to answer the charges leveled against them. The cooperation of the public is always appreciated in our efforts to maintain law and order,” he stated.

Hamoonga further encouraged citizens to report any suspicious activities to the nearest police station.
