Jane Lusengo, accused of murdering her husband, former Zambia Air Force (ZAF) commander Ronnie Shikapwasha, has reportedly developed severe hypertension in prison, sometimes resulting in convulsions, the Lusaka High Court heard on Thursday.
The 73-year-old allegedly shot her husband with his own double-barrel shotgun earlier this year.
As the trial resumed before Judge Conceptor Chinyanwa Zulu, Lusengo’s lawyer, Gilbert Pindani, expressed concern about her deteriorating health, noting that her condition had worsened since imprisonment despite no prior history of hypertension.
Pindani requested that she be allowed access to specialized medical facilities for further examination and treatment, as her care has so far been limited to the prison facility.
Judge Zulu emphasized the importance of adequate healthcare, stating, “If she needs medical attention, let her be given.
She had the right to be treated well; when she was unwell, she should seek medical attention.”
The prosecution noted that five more witnesses were set to testify.
The trial was adjourned to December 12, 2024.
