Lovemore Kanyama, a founding member of the ruling United Party for National Development (UPND), has called on Zambians to back President Hakainde Hichilema’s proposed constitutional reforms, emphasising that the President’s intentions were in the best interest of the country.
Kanyama, a former Siavonga District Commissioner under the Patriotic Front (PF), highlighted that the reforms would help avoid unnecessary by-elections, which incur significant costs.
He urged Zambians to support changes aimed at preventing electoral manipulations that lead to the withdrawal of candidates after nominations.
“President Hichilema is concerned about wasting national resources on avoidable elections, which is why it’s crucial for Zambians to support these reforms,” Kanyama said in a statement issued in Lusaka.
The reforms aligned with suggestions made by the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ), which had expressed concerns over the public’s interpretation of Article 52 of the Zambian Constitution.
ECZ Chairperson, Mwangala Zaloumis, speaking at an event in Lusaka, stressed the importance of revising the article, which governed electoral nominations and broader election regulations.
