President Hakainde Hichilema has honoured late Chief Justice Ireen Mambilima posthumously for her outstanding service to the nation when she served as first female Chief Justice of Zambia.
Mambilima also served as Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) Chairperson as well as Zambia Institute of Advanced Education (ZIALE) Council Chairperson among other portfolios.
Hichilema pronounced the honour on the late Chief Justice at the investitute ceremony of Honours and Awards held at State House on Tuesday. The late justice died in Egypt on June 20, 2021 whilst on duty,
The event was part of activities commemorating the country’s 59th Independence Anniversary.
Mambilima who was 69 years at the time of her death was appointed as the first female Chief Justice of Zambia on February 26, 2015.
During the ceremony, 16 people were recognised with various awards and honours for their distinguished service, bravery and contribution to the country’s wellbeing and development in various sectors.
Hichilema also honoured former European Union (EU) Ambassador to Zambia, Jacek Jankowski with the Order of the Eagle of Zambia Third Division.

Jankowski had been recognised for organising and coordinating several high level meetings between Zambia and the EU which include the historical address to the European Union Parliament by Hichilema in June 2022.
The Head of State also honoured Paramount Chief Mpezeni, the 4th of the Ngoni People with the Order of the Eagle of Zambia Third Division.
Mpezeni had been honoured for ensuring his subjects are agriculture oriented and for working with at least six political regimes during his 40-years reign.
