The ground breaking ceremony of Nkana Water Treatment project has been done with President Hakainde Hichilema in attendance.

The water scheme is expected to help resolve the water crisis in Kitwe.

And, while addressing Copperbelt University (CBU) and Mukuba University students, the President said the debt restructuring has brightened the country’s economic future.

Speaking during the ground breaking on Saturday, he said his government would ensure the provision of water supply in Kitwe and elsewhere.

“We are committed to provide water to the residents of Kitwe and this project will serve a great purpose,” President Hichilema said.

“This is the reason I undertook a five-day visit to the Copperbelt to interact with the people here to hear their challenges on the ground,” President Hichilema said.

Construction works at the plant are being carried out by Henani Corporation (CHICO) which according to Copperbelt Minister, Elias Matambo, is one of the biggest water and sanitation reticulation system in the country.

“The Nkana Water Bulangililo Water Treatment Plant Expansion will help to sort out water and sanitation challenges within Kitwe District and beyond,” Matambo said.

While at CBU, he said the debt restructuring was a game changer to the economy.

“Without debt restructuring, the economy would have died, we have become the first country to achieve debt restructuring in the world,” the Head of State said.

Earlier in the day, the President attended a church service at Kitwe’s Mindolo Seventh Day Adventist.

He told the congregants that his government was committed to ensure that development reached all corners of the country.

President Hichilema is expected to conclude his five-day tour of the Copperbelt with the commissioning of the Kawama First Level Hospital on Sunday.
