The United Party for National Development (UPND)on the Copperbelt says it is concerned about water shortages experienced in the mining town of Mufulira.
Copperbelt UPND Deputy Information and Publicity Secretary for Administration, Godfrey Kamangu, said a critical shortage of water has hit Mufulira District.
“This situation is posing a public health risk with Butondo, Kankoyo, Kantanshi townships, Town area, Fairview and Topshops areas being the most affected where residents were being forced to travel distances to fetch water,” Kamangu said in a statement on Wednesday.
He said if left unchecked it might result in sicknesses, which can affect members of the public who are having little or no water for sanitary purposes.

“When contacted, Mulonga Water and Sanitation company said the challenges being faced by Mulonga were compounded by fatigued pumps at the company’s Pump Stations which have broken down,”Kamangu said.
He said that of the eight pumps the company used in the supply of water to the communities, five were supposed to be running and three are on standby.
Kamangu said unfortunately six had broken down leaving only two to run in a rationing pertain.
“We wish to call on Mulonga Water management to quickly repair the broken down water pumps or better still buy new pumps to avoid putting people’s lives at risk,” he said.
