Vice President, Mutale Nalumango, has called on Zambians to embrace innovation in making local foods more appealing and accessible, emphasizing the benefits for affordability and national pride.

Speaking on Wednesday during the World Food Day celebrations held at the Lusaka showgrounds, Nalumango stressed the importance of promoting Zambian cuisine to make it a larger part of the national diet.

She noted that enhancing the presentation and marketing of local dishes could help lower food costs for many Zambians.

“We must be proud of our local dishes by showcasing food that is meant to support human life,” she said.

Nalumango added that Zambia was rich in nutritious local foods, and that those in the food industry should seize the opportunity to boost their presence in the market.

“Our local food should have more space in our commercial shops,” she said.

She urged Zambian businesses to prioritize local products in their offerings.

The Vice President also highlighted the need for the country to reduce its dependence on foreign food products.

She acknowledged that foreign cuisine can be enjoyed, but local food should take precedence as part of the national identity.

“We can eat food from other cultures, but let local food be doctrinal,” she added.

The Vice President called for Zambians to celebrate and elevate their culinary heritage.
