US govt awards $152,000 grants to nine community-based organisations in Zambia

The United States (U.S) Embassy in Zambia, through the Public Affairs Small Grants Programme, has awarded US$152,000 to nine Zambian Community-Based Organizations (CBO).

This is meant to expand economic opportunity, improve health and education, and fight corruption in communities in six provinces, according to a statement issued in Lusaka on Monday.

The Public Affairs Small Grants Programme provides financial support from the American people directly to Zambian community organisation committed to improving the lives of community members through sustainable projects that bolster economic development, democracy and governance, health, and education.

The programme prioritises funding for non-profit organisation with innovative project ideas that reach traditionally underserved areas or groups.

The embassy indicated that they were proud to provide these meaningful funding opportunities to organisations developing their own solutions to address inadequacies within their communities.

The embassy said grants were selected through a merit-based review process that assessed their projects’ objectives, organisational capacity, and focus areas.

Grants awarded this year would support the organisations and projects in Central, Copperbelt, Lusaka, Muchinga, Southern, and Western provinces.

According to the embassy, the organisations which have been awarded Funzeleo would conduct a teacher training programme to expose educators to techniques for integrating Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) practical skills into their classroom teaching.

It stated that the Girl Up project seeks to empower young girls with STEM skills and tools to amplify their opportunities to pursue careers in STEM.

It further indicated that the Mother of Millions Foundation’s women’s empowerment and mentorship programme would support women with financial literacy, entrepreneurship, and business skills.

It said that the Munu Ka Yumbwa Cerebral Palsy would lead programmes to enhance education and healthcare support for children with neurodevelopmental disorders.

Visionary Students Initiative would carry out advocacy programmes in schools and communities to promote mental health wellness for young women, while encouraging community service and volunteerism.

The embassy stated that the Wildlife and Environmental Conservation Society of Zambia would establish knowledge and skill hubs in secondary schools and transform traditional school gardens into green spaces for adolescents, youth, and teachers to learn climate change interventions.

Word Smash Poetry would use creative arts to promote freedom of expression, social accountability, transparency, and accountability in public service delivery.

Zambians Promoting Leadership in America Foundation would promote accountable governance in the utilization of public resources in agriculture, health, and education sectors.

The U.S. Embassy said it would announce the application season for the next round of funding in 2024.
