Spuki Mulemwa, spokesperson for the United Party for National Development (UPND) Western Province Presidential Campaign Team, has alleged that the opposition is attempting to use proposed constitutional amendments to push for regime change.
“It is very unfortunate that some opposition political parties, civil society organisations, and certain church mother bodies, in alliance with media houses hostile to President Hakainde Hichilema, are using the government’s consultative and consensus-building constitution-making process to gain cheap political mileage and agitate for regime change,” Mulemwa said in a statement on Sunday.
He argued that President Hichilema’s proposed constitutional amendments were made in good faith.
“It is unfortunate that those opposed to the ideas have taken a confrontational stance instead of pursuing constructive engagement with the government,” he stated.
Mulemwa argued that there was no justification for anti-government protests, dismissing opposition claims that the constitution was being manipulated.
“Government has not abrogated or mutilated the constitution in any way that would warrant protests or so-called defence of the constitution and homeland, as the opposition and their partners purport,” he said.
Mulemwa urged Zambians to ignore those agitating for regime change by accusing the government of acting mischievously on the constitutional amendments.
“If anything, it is the opposition and their partners who are being mischievous and unpatriotic by spreading falsehoods over the proposed amendments, not the government,” he added.
Mulemwa further stated that President Hichilema remained committed to inclusivity, ensuring that women, youth, and persons with disabilities were considered in the amendment process while preserving the constitution’s integrity.
He advised the opposition to engage the government on national matters and provide credible checks and balances rather than inciting the public against an elected government based on “baseless and unfounded allegations of manipulation.”
