The ruling UPND National Youth Wing has condemned the opposition Patriotic Front (PF) for its absence from the official memorial service for former President Michael Sata, criticising them for holding a separate event.
Jonathan Hangwemu, UPND National Youth Chairperson for Finance and Mobilization, stated at a media briefing held at Radisson Blu Hotel in Lusaka on Tuesday that it was inappropriate for the Edgar Lungu-led PF to bypass the government-organised event.
“This separate commemoration undermines any meaningful dialogue efforts between President Hakainde Hichilema and former President Lungu,” Hangwemu stated.
He added that the PF’s actions displayed ongoing animosity toward the UPND.
“The UPND has nothing to lose by refraining from dialogue with PF leaders who continue to exhibit indiscipline on national matters,” he said.
Hangwemu also urged the Catholic Church not to allow itself to be used for political purposes, cautioning Lusaka Diocese Archbishop Alick Banda to focus on unity rather than partisanship.
He further expressed appreciation to late Sata’s family for cooperating with the government to honor Zambia’s fifth president.
