Former Kasama lawmaker, Kelvin Sampa, has been arrested in connection with alleged multiple offenses, including obtaining US$80,000 by false pretenses.
Sampa, a member of the ruling UPND Mobilisation Committee, is also charged with possession of counterfeit notes and implements intended for forgery.
Police Spokesperson, Rae Hamoonga, confirmed the arrest in a statement issued on Wednesday, noting that the offenses violated Sections 309, 370(c), and 351 of the Penal Code Act, Chapter 87 of the Laws of Zambia.
In the first charge, Sampa, alongside accomplices including Mabo Martin, allegedly obtained US$80,000 from Japanese national Satoshi Sakamoto by falsely claiming the money would be used to assist in purchasing refined gold in Zambia.
In the second charge, Sampa was found with 49 counterfeit US$100 notes, amounting to US$4,900, which were presented as genuine.
The third charge involved Sampa being in possession of paper intended to resemble the special material used in the production of currency notes, along with other forgery implements.
The alleged crimes occurred between June and September 2024 in Lusaka District.
Hamoonga confirmed that Sampa has been formally charged and will appear in court soon.
The police have assured the public of their commitment to maintaining financial system integrity and urged caution when conducting financial transactions.
