UPND expels senior members for alleged gross misconduct, vows to tackle indiscipline

The ruling United Party for National Development (UPND) has expelled its Deputy Chairperson for Rural Development, Frazer Monde, and Chisankane Ward Councillor, Kebby Sikangila, for gross misconduct.

UPND Spokesperson. Cornelius Mweetwa, during a media briefing in Lusaka on Thursday, warned that the party would not tolerate indiscipline, especially from senior members who are aware of the proper channels to address grievances.

“The UPND is a party in government, and we cannot allow senior members to attack one another on social media. There are proper channels to follow, and those abusing social media will be dealt with. We are watching,” Mweetwa cautioned.

He further emphasized that the party’s focus would be on addressing national issues such as poverty and the state of the economy, rather than internal wrangles.

Mweetwa urged party members to put their energy into policies that would improve the lives of Zambians, warning that any distraction could jeopardize the party’s chances in the 2026 elections.

The Chief Government Spokesperson also addressed social media pages aligned with the government, advising them to avoid being used by UPND members to insult senior officials.

Mweetwa also announced that the party would petition the Electoral Commission of Zambia to declare the Chisankane Ward seat vacant and call for a by-election, signaling the UPND’s readiness to contest upcoming by-elections, including those in Pambashe and Petauke.

“We have won almost 99 percent of the by-elections during our three years in power—a feat unprecedented in Zambian politics,” Mweetwa boasted.
