Barely a week after losing the Petauke Central by-election to the New Congress Party, the ruling United Party for National Development (UPND) has dissolved its Eastern Province Executive, led by Johabie Mtonga, citing internal divisions and incompetence.
UPND Secretary-General, Batuke Imenda, described the decision as necessary to restore order and discipline within the party’s structures.
He also announced the dissolution of the Petauke District Executive.
Speaking at a media briefing in Lusaka on Monday, Imenda raised concerns over poor communication of government initiatives in Eastern Province, attributing it to ineffective outreach by local party structures.
“Many residents remain unaware of the significant progress made by the UPND administration due to weak communication efforts. There is a need to bridge this gap so that citizens are well-informed about the government’s achievements and ongoing development programs,” he said.
Imenda also expressed gratitude to Zambians for their support in recent by-elections, highlighting UPND’s victory in three out of four contests.
He credited the success to public confidence in the government’s policies aimed at economic growth and Zambia’s transformation into a middle-income nation by 2030.
“I urge Zambians to continue supporting the party and President Hakainde Hichilema’s vision for national development, now and beyond 2026,” he added.
He further called for unity and reconciliation among UPND members, particularly in Eastern Province, where internal divisions have reportedly persisted since the 2021 intra-party elections.
