The University of Zambia (UNZA) has imposed a surcharge of K1000 on every student at the Great East Road campus due to the damage caused during the riots on September 18, 2023.

The university had mandated that students settle these charges before the publication of this year’s examination results.

In the official memo, UNZA, through the office of the registrar, specified that this surcharge applied to all students, including second-year medical students.

Additionally, the university stated that the affected students would receive invoices at the end of the 2022/2023 academic year examinations.

“On September 18, 2023, students at UNZA engaged in riots and caused damage to several university properties,” it stated.

These actions followed the circulation of a memo on social media alleging the cancellation of the 2023 UNZA Student Union elections.
