A University lecturer has urged the government to introduce an updated regulatory framework for the energy sector to address Zambia’s ongoing power shortages.

Olawale Popoola, a lecturer at Tshwane University of Technology, highlighted the importance of aligning regulatory frameworks with current national challenges, particularly the power deficit.

Speaking to journalists in Lusaka on Wednesday, Popoola warned against simply adopting frameworks from other countries without considering local conditions.

“There is a need to ensure synergy between the regulatory framework and national strategies to effectively address the deficit,” he said.

Popoola also emphasized the necessity of upgrading infrastructure to meet the demands of a growing population, noting that increased demand puts additional strain on existing systems.

“As we consider demand growth with our population, we must focus on improving infrastructure. Zambia needs policies that reflect the realities on the ground,” he stated.

He further stressed the importance of enhancing transmission lines.
