UKA suffers another setback as national youth chairperson, Sipalo, resigns

The United Kwacha Alliance (UKA) has been dealt another blow with the resignation of its National Youth Chairperson, Thomas Sipalo, who cited a lack of direction within the party.

In a resignation letter dated November 18, 2024, addressed to UKA Chairperson, Sakwiba Sikota, and copied to the Council of Presidents, Sipalo attributed his decision to issues bordering on selfish motives, greed, partiality, and individualism within the alliance.

“Please accept this letter as formal notice of my resignation effective immediately. After careful reflection, I have concluded that the current trajectory of the UKA no longer aligns with my values and principles,” Sipalo wrote.

He criticised the alliance’s leadership for failing to provide a clear vision, citing increasing ambiguity in objectives, indecision, and ineffective leadership.

“The pervasive lack of direction, greed, selfishness, and individualistic tendencies have created an environment that prioritises personal interests over the collective good,” he stated.

Sipalo further accused the alliance of focusing on internal power struggles and personal agenda, eroding unity and public trust.

“There is an evident inconsistency in holding leaders accountable, with some escaping scrutiny while others face undue consequences,” Sipalo added.

He lamented UKA’s failure to address critical national issues and deliver meaningful change, stating that it had strayed far from its foundational purpose.

“Given these challenges, I find it impossible to continue contributing to an organization that has lost its way. My conscience compels me to prioritise integrity and the greater public good,” he said.

Sipalo expressed gratitude for his time in the position and assured his commitment to a smooth transition, pledging to complete any outstanding tasks to ensure continuity.

Meanwhile, UKA Chairperson Sakwiba Sikota has received Sipalo’s resignation and wished him well in his future political endeavors.

“We thank him for any contributions he might have made to the people’s movement, UKA. We have received the resignation letter of the UKA National Youth Chairperson, Mr. Sipalo,” Sikota said in a statement.

Sikota reassured supporters that UKA’s focus would remain on its mission to “liberate the suffering Zambians from President Hichilema and the UPND’s misrule,” in alliance with like-minded individuals and organizations.

UKA had recently been embroiled in what many are calling a leadership crisis, with growing dissent within the party.

This followed the resignation of the UKA’s former Secretary-General, Lucky Mulusa, who cited poor leadership as the primary reason for his departure.

Mulusa’s resignation came on the heels of the exit of two Council of Presidents members, Peter Chanda from the New Congress Party (NCP) and Hector Sondo from United for a Better Zambia, both of whom cited similar concerns about the party’s direction.

Adding to the turmoil, the Council of Presidents also expelled Green Party leader Peter Sinkamba, Patriots for Economic Progress leader Sean Tembo, and Christian Democratic Party President Dr. Danny Pule for allegedly supporting rival alliances.

As UKA grapples with internal divisions and leadership instability, it remained to be seen how the resignation of its Youth Chairperson will further affect the alliance’s future trajectory.
