Uganda approves historic single SIM card policy to streamline communication, reduce costs

Uganda has approved a historic proposal for a single SIM card policy, which aims to streamline communication across all mobile networks in the country.

The initiative, designed to ease the burden of multiple SIM cards on mobile phone users, was unanimously approved during a plenary session chaired by Deputy Parliamentary Speaker Thomas Tayebwa, Techinafrica reported.

According to Ugandan media reports, the policy, spearheaded in parliament by Mityana MP Joyce Bagala, will soon allow consumers to make calls, send texts, and perform transactions seamlessly across various mobile networks.

“This development will significantly improve network accessibility and lower connectivity costs. Service quality will also improve, as telecom companies will compete to offer the best services to retain customers. Most importantly, it will provide great convenience for users,” she stated.

Parliament has urged the Uganda Communications Commission to expedite the implementation of the policy.

The proposed consumer protection measure, according to MPs, will allow subscribers to keep their phone numbers when switching networks or changing geographic locations.

They believe this move, which received widespread support from lawmakers, will improve network accessibility, lower communication costs, and enhance service quality by encouraging healthy competition among telecom providers.

Deputy Speaker Tayebwa emphasized the convenience this new policy will bring to Ugandans, including parliamentarians.

“If we can have something that saves me from carrying two or three phones, it would be a relief. We travel internationally and are often asked why we’re carrying three phones,” he remarked.

However, the implementation of the initiative comes with challenges.

State Minister for ICT, Godfrey Kabbyanga Baluku, cautioned that the transition will require significant infrastructure upgrades from both the government and telecom providers.
