In a significant political shift, the United for Better Zambia (UBZ) Party has severed ties with the United Kwacha Alliance (UKA), following the recent departure of National Congress Party leader, Peter Chanda.
UBZ Party president, Hector Sondo, outlined several reasons for this decision in a resignation letter dated October 12, 2024, addressed to UKA Chairperson Sakwiba Sikota.
Sondo cited multiple issues contributing to the UBZ Party’s exit from the alliance.
These included the failure to address the alleged misconduct of National Democratic Congress leader, Saboi Imboela, who had disrespected former President Edgar Lungu through voice notes.
Additionally, Sondo criticised the UKA for not taking action against the Citizens First Party for alleged insults towards the former President and for the lack of respect shown by the Council of Presidents regarding Lungu’s eligibility case for the 2026 elections.
“You failed to give hope to poor citizens eleven months after allegedly forming the same unsuccessful UKA,” Sondo stated.
He also expressed frustration over the absence of inclusive decision-making, noting that the exclusion of broader input from the assembly of Presidents and the Council of Secretary-Generals was problematic.
Sondo described the remaining UKA Council of Presidents as ineffective and accused them of wasting time, ultimately concluding that UBZ and UKA have diverging objectives.
“Given these issues, UBZ cannot continue as partners with the United Kwacha Alliance,” Sondo declared.
